The Great Glacier Trek Debate

By Jack Brooker
Travel Consultants

Perito Moreno

Extremely well organised and structured day

An excellent excuse to visit the still relatively unknown El Chaltén

Professional and well drilled guides with good levels of English and knowledge of the glacier

Feeling of being the only people on the ice with only one am/pm departure per day

‘Big Ice’ option for the more adventurous and experienced ice trekker

excellent standard of equipment with 10/12 point crampons

Pristine Glacial formations everywhere you look

No upper age limit on the treks – meaning it is open to anyone who wants to do it

Chance to use the walkways and even the café at the viewpoint up above the glacier at the end of the day

Small walking groups so you cover a lot of ground in the 2 hours or so that you have on the ice

Lots of departures meaning you will never struggle to get on the tours

memorable boat trip to the glacier edge between floating icebergs with the backdrop of Fitz Roy

Large walking groups giving you the chance to mingle with other like minded travellers

Incredible views from the Ice across Viedma Lake and to Mounts Huemul and Campaňa

Perito Moreno: A brilliant first time glacier trek experience for people on a tight time scale and unable to visit El Chaltén. Getting up close to the Ice and doing the mini-trekking supplements the already impressive panoramic views offered from the walkways later in the day.

Viedma: Highly recommended for anyone wanting a slightly more ‘off the beaten track’ glacier hike. With so few people on the ice there is a genuine feeling of isolation and discovery, and the views from the end of the trail sipping a Baileys chilled by Glacial Ice will live long in the memory!
