Ringing the Changes in Cuba
Unless you’ve been hiding these past few months (since end of Dec'14) you’ll be aware of the new US-Cuba ties…
As Cuba eases its restrictions on US travel and trade, life in Cuba as we know it, is bound to change. The feeling in Cuba is one of general excitement and optimism as the doors open up and restrictions are slowly lifted. Cubans, who previously haven’t been able to travel, will have the opportunity to find out what’s going on outside of the country and a chance to interact with others who previously would have never had contact with. We suspect that when the doors fully open changes to infrastructure and the economy are likely to move at a fast pace.
First action to take place is the re-establishment of the direct Cuba US phone link, for the first time in fifteen years. According to the trusty BBC, telephone calls used to be passed via a third country making them very expensive, but now Americans and Cubans can make direct calls to each other’s countries.
"This is great news! Millions of Cubans who live abroad have been paying premium amounts to call Cuba, including myself where I often pay £1 a minute. This is a beginning of a brilliant future and a relief for Cubans (I hope)." Annerys Hockley, Cuban, in our Bespoke Department.
Etecsa, Cuba’s state communications company believe this new situation will make it easier and more affordable for their customers to call family and friends back home. A good time to be in telecommunications!
