I want to travel overland from Buenos Aires to Lima and not sure which route to take through which countries. what do you suggest?

    Asked by Angela Stewart

Having organised tours to Central and South America for over 35 years, the best way to travel overland from Buenos Aires to Lima is via Salta in northwest Argentina. Continue to the Atacama Desert and travel across the Uyuni Salt Flats up to La Paz. Then, take a boat across Lake Titicaca to Puno in Peru. If you can take the train from Puno to Cusco then I highly recommend that option – travelling by rail across the high-altitude plains is spectacular. Alternatively, you can take a bus – both options will take around 9-10 hours. From Cusco you can travel overland to Lima via the Nazca Lines and Paracas.

We offer a 21-day Pato Andino: Panorama of the Andes group tour. The trip starts from £3,928pp with flights. If you are travelling alone and you are happy to share a room, then there will be no single supplement.

If you have more than three weeks to take this trip, you may also want to consider including Patagonia in the far south of Argentina and Chile and also the Amazon which is easily reached by air from Cusco.
