Old Patagonia Express

Ask our Experts

I saw your trail-blazer tour and would like to go on the Old Patagonian Express but I've been to Argentina before, is it worth going again?

Asked by Bob

The "Trail-Blazing across Patagonia" journey is a unique opportunity to travel to Argentina and Chile escorted not only by the company's founder, Brian Williams, but also by a great tour leader, Sarah White, who has been living in Chilean Patagonia for many years. Both of them are very knowledgeable about the area and I can imagine there will be a fair few anecdotes along the way.

The tour starts in Buenos Aires, a city that it is well worth visiting more than once, continuing on to Welsh Patagonia where you will be able to have tea in a local tea house and experience traditional welsh culture - a very different side to Argentina. You would also have the option to visit the Valdés Peninsula, where you will be able to spot local wildlife, including southern right whales. From there you will have the rail journey of a lifetime on the famous Old Patagonian Express, “La Trochita”. You don't need to be a train buff to appreciate this journey at the end of the world.

Once in Chilean Patagonia you will then take the Carretera Austral - a highlight of the trip in its own right - down to the small town of Puerto Bertrán, where there will be time to relax in the spectacular scenery. The journey continues by ferry along the fjord and islets to Chiloé where you will enjoy the beautiful isolated island before ending with a night in the city of Santiago, one of the most developed capitals in Latin America.

My advice is simple - tag along, you won’t regret it. I am an Argentinean and I would love to be a part of this fantastic once-in-a-lifetime journey through these remote parts of Patagonia - little visited but nonetheless one of the most beautiful parts of the world. Sadly for me though I'll be stuck in the office!
