Covid-19 testing before and after your holiday

Travelling to Latin America

Many Latin American countries now require visitors to take a PCR test, usually within 48-72hrs of arrival, and present a negative result to enter the country. Visit our Covid Destination Information page for the current entry requirements and other essential resources.

We strongly advise travelling with proof of full vaccination against Covid-19. Even where this is not a requirement for entry, it may be needed to access places of interest, accommodation and restaurants and avoid further testing throughout your holiday. If you are not fully vaccinated, local restrictions may significantly impact your holiday. Regulations continue to evolve, particularly for the non-vaccinated, and changes are likely between the time of booking and travel.

Returning to England

All travellers must complete a Passenger Locator Form in the 48hrs before arriving into England.

  • Fully vaccinated travellers and all children aged 5-17 (irrespective of vaccination status) must book and pay for a Day 2 Covid-19 test prior to arrival back in England as booking details of the test must be added to the Passenger Locator Form. Cheaper Antigen (Lateral Flow) tests are permitted instead of a PCR test. There is no requirement to self-isolate upon arrival.
  • Not fully vaccinated travellers must have proof of a negative Covid-19 test taken in the 2 days before the service on which they arrive into England departs. PCR, LAMP and Antigen (Lateral Flow) tests are all permitted and they may be self-administered. Your Travel Expert can help arrange a test for you locally if you do not wish to travel with a self-testing kit purchased in the UK. If you are transiting another country on your journey back to England you should check if the transit country permits self-administered tests (the USA, for example, does not).
Additionally, travellers must book and pay for Day 2 and Day 8 PCR Covid-19 tests prior to arrival back in England as booking details of the tests must be added to the Passenger Locator Form. Travellers will be required to self-isolate for 10 days at home but can use the Day 5 PCR Test to Release scheme to end it early.
  • Children aged 4 or under do not have to take any Covid-19 travel tests or self-isolate to enter England.
  • Different rules apply to travellers returning from red list countries (of which there are currently none in Latin America).
  • Visit Travelling to England for full entry requirements, taking note that rules may differ for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Top tips from our travel experts

  1. Check carefully which test is required to ensure you book the one which meets your needs; some destinations insist on a PCR rather than a LAMP or antigen (lateral flow) test and the pre-departure window in which the test must be taken can vary by destination.
  2. Most providers offer both in-clinic tests (where the tests are administered by health professionals) and home testing kits. Where possible we strongly recommend you arrange an administered test in order to minimise the risk of an inconclusive or incorrect test result. Indeed, some destinations will not accept self-administered tests.
  3. Most countries require visitors to take their PCR test within 48-72hrs of arrival. If you decide to use a home testing-kit, where possible we recommend avoiding services that rely on Royal Mail due to the potential for postal delays.
  4. Book your tests well in advance of when it is required, particularly during peak periods when in-clinic testing availability be limited.
  5. Non-vaccinated travellers who require a test prior to entering England (see above) may find it most convenient to purchase a self-administered test kit to take with them on holiday but if transiting another country should first check if the transit country permits self-administered tests (the USA, for example, does not).
