Venezuela Angel Falls and the Gran Sabana
The ancient, sheer-walled table-mountain tepuys of the Gran Sabana are known as the ‘Lost World’ with a nod to Arthur Conan Doyle’s adventure story.
The ancient, sheer-walled table-mountain tepuys of the Gran Sabana are known as the ‘Lost World’ with a nod to Arthur Conan Doyle’s adventure story. In the yawning landscape of the savannah grasslands below the tepuys there are many streams and waterfalls, but the best known cascade is the Angel Falls, plunging nearly a kilometre over a vertical cliff in a single veil of spray.
In this wilderness, prospectors gather to mine the mineral-rich veins of rock. But for the visitor it is the horizon-bending landscape of sun-swept grasslands, waterfalls and black lagoons fringed with pink sands which supplies the treasure.

Where to go when - our guide to Angel Falls and the Gran Sabana
The weather in Angel Falls and the Gran Sabana is wide and varied
High above savannah grasslands are the ancient table-mountain tepuys of the Gran Sabana. Here many waterfalls tumble from great heights, but the best known cascade is the Angel Falls, plunging nearly a kilometre over a vertical cliff in a single veil of spray. The best time for climbing Roraima is in the dry season which runs from December - April, although Angel Falls slows to a trickle by May. To see the falls at their most voluminous and dramatic, you’d do better to visit during the rainy season, particularly from August - September. Due to heavier cloud cover you run the risk of not seeing the falls from the air during the wet season, though you may wish to canoe from the foot of the falls.View our Angel Falls and the Gran Sabana weather guide
