This sun-kissed archipelago and national park lies in the Caribbean Sea 160km north of Caracas. The cays offer sizzling white-sand beaches, warm, clear aquamarine waters and a coral reef lively with vivid tropical fish.
Day 1: Fly from Caracas to Los Roques, transfer on foot to your posada (guest house).
Days 2, 3: At leisure on the vehicle-free, lightly palm-dotted islands. The only village, Gran Roque, is a small fishing port with three sandy lanes of single-storey cottages, a few tiny shops, a dive centre and attractive small-scale guest houses. Most buildings are Spanish colonial style with a dash of Caribbean colour: whitewashed with gaily painted doors and windows. The fishermen's bright wooden boats are pulled up on the sand.
The posadas supply motorised boats to take you out to the nearby cays. You can snorkel straight off the shore of some of them, fish, or just sunbathe (there is little shade).
The ambience is laid-back and totally unspoilt. Sunshine is pretty-well guaranteed year round: in short, a perfect, relaxing beach wind-down.
Day 4: Return to Caracas by air to continue your holiday or to connect to your international flight.
