From the Inca Imperial capital and Spanish colonial masterpiece Cusco you head down to the rainforest. Refugio Amazonas is a popular and well respected lodge in the Tambopata region, the most accessible area of Peru's vast Amazon territory. On this holiday, not only will you have the chance to view wildlife but you may also be able to observe the conservation-focused scientists and researchers in the jungle.
Continue by air to Guayquil, Ecuador's principal Pacific port, and fly on for an 5-day cruise around the Galápagos Islands. It was on a similar trip 200 years ago that Darwin returned to the archipelago to write the seminal book ‘On The Origin of Species’. Step into his shoes and explore the diversity of land and marine life which inhabit the islands.
The different ecosystems you will visit, from humid lowland jungle to the volcanic islands of the Galápagos ensure that you will observe a multitude of species. Just look at the statistics -Peru alone has over 1,800 species of birds (120 endemic to Peru), and 500 species of mammals and over 300 species of reptiles.

What our clients say
97% of our clients rated their experience with us as Excellent or Good.
We have toured the USA, Europe and China before but the experience we had with JLA was the by far and away the best we've ever had!PD, Stockport
I would recommend this trip to anyone who has an interest in magnificent scenery and wonderful wildlife experiences.CT, Antrim
This was my third holiday with Journey Latin America, and once again all aspects of the service that I received was very good. Etienne was a great tour leader, and it was a pleasure to be in his company. I would not hesitate to recommend Journey Latin America to anyone, wishing to visit South America.PH, Basildon
It is an itinerary which covers different environments and allows interaction with the wonderful Colombian people plus time to see what is in each place.BD, Hartlepool
Reaching the summit of Machu Picchu Mountain and seeing views that will live with me for the rest of my life ... wow! This was a very special moment.PB, Wareham
Please describe the most memorable experience/aspect of your trip? "The first time a sea lion came up to have a good look at me when I was snorkeling in the Galapagos and played around me with such grace and freedom."LH, Hong Kong
After having seen Kuelap on BBC visiting in reality was amazing. It didn't disappoint, despite the rain showers.JB, Hendon
Highlights? Friends have asked us this and we struggle because there were so many! The magic of Easter Island and we had to keep reminding ourselves that we were actually there and seeing sights which had excited and intrigued us for a long time. El Tatio geysers at dawn were stunning. The Perito Moreno Glacier on a beautiful sunny day was awesome. The 'reveal' moment at the end of the 4wd tour at Estancia Cristina seeing the panoramic view of the Upsala Glacier.LW, Chesterfield
Most memorable experience: “I can't really single out any one- I found it all memorable but what was a real pleasure was the friendliness of the local people.”PB, Swansea
"The holiday was wide-ranging, expertly organised and allowed us time to go 'off-tour' and enjoy the locations independently which I appreciated, given the swift nature of the journey."MB, London
Most memorable experience? - Iguacu Falls were amazing. Boat trip under the falls and helicopter ride from the Brazilian side were truly memorable.
I thoroughly enjoyed my holiday to Brazil with JLA and was impressed with their organisation and local knowledge. Our tour guide, was excellent and went that 'extra mile' to make our holiday an enjoyable experience. During the Trogon itinerary I saw some amazing places not least, Rio de Janeiro, The Pantanal and Iguacu Falls. My private extension to Ouro Preto in Minas Gerais was also well organised and the local guides (both women) used for the private transfers looked after me very well. As a woman travelling alone it was good to know that my safety and security was a high priority.HP, Richmond
Machu Picchu. What a privilege to go to such a stunning place. It was a little too busy in the morning, but walking part of the Inca Trail to the Sun Gate in the afternoon, when it had quietened down was an experience I will never forget. The train from Puno to Cusco was also something very special. In fact, most of the trip was just amazing. Well organised and we saw so much that would probably have been impossible as a solo traveller.RW, Holmfirth
There were many wonderful memories. Iguacu was amazing and Machu Picchu was intriguing. Landscapes were fascinating & the people were friendly. Lovely to see the colourful costumes & markets.JP, Nottingham
The Bolivian deserts and salt flats, I found a new favourite country in South America. Outstanding scenery, the night sky with a full and clear sight of the Milky Way, several planets and a myriad of stars, friendly people and an area which I had little prior knowledge of.BD, Hartlepool
"Dancing at Cafe Taberna in Havana; going to the ballet in Havana on our last night. Both occasions unforgettable. But there were other highlights such as swimming in the Banos de San Juan, outside Las Terrazas; eating at El Paraiso (near Vinales) whilst watching the sun set; staying at Las Terrazas; going for an amazing massage in Trinidad; the trip in a Vintage car whilst in Havana; learning about the history and politics of the country, most particularly the Revolution; reading Graham Greene's Our Man In Havana whilst sitting on a terrace watching a thunderstorm in Trinidad."KG, London
Boat ride through the canyon (just what we needed to blow the cobwebs away after an early start and a long journey). Palenque took my breath away - literally, I climbed to the top of the pyramid! The trip to the two indigenous villages was extremely fascinating.
Another superb holiday with JLA I would never travel to Latin America with another company.BD, Hartlepool
“One of my favourite moments on the trip was in Trinidad, listening to the music and dancing with the locals – with the tour leader’s guidance or walking around Havana, just taking everything in.”KSM, Luxembourg
Another very interesting and well organised Journey Latin America trip.HM, Nuneaton
Jam packed itinerary with so many great places and sights in such a short time! Iguacu Falls, Rio, La Paz, Cusco, Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu- it really had it all. We had a great tour guide; informative, knowledgeable and extremely personable, with a wealth of knowledge and a genuine passion for South America. Logistics were seamless- first time travelling to South America, first time travelling solo- highly recommend it!LM, London
I enjoyed the mountain scenery and also walking in the forests. Watching a ship passing through the lock on the Panama Canal. Zip lining and the Tarzan swing was a good adrenelin rush.RL, Devizes
Chile is an amazing country - but much bigger and more diverse than I expected. Penguin gives an excellent dip into the Chilean experience - but leaves you wanting more.JR, London
Difficult to say as it was a trip of contrasts - two cities and some beautiful landscapes. I achieved two ambitions which was to visit the Torres del Paine National Park and to see the Perito Moreno glacier. Torres del Paine was glorious and Perito Moreno was breathtaking. All internal transfers were seamless and check in and check out of hotels were easy. The small group made the holiday feel almost personalised.TW, Hook
We have travelled with JLA on several occasions throughout South America. JLA may not be the cheapest tour operator, but booking with JLA means peace of mind, expert and helpful advice, reliable pick ups and travel arrangements and expert and informative tour leaders and local guides. A holiday should be free of worry and JLA take care of everything!CR, Bath
Amazing trip, fab group, experienced guide and definitely value for money. Would highly recommend.AB, London
"Cuba exceeded my expectations : it is beautiful architecturally and naturally, fascinating historically, politically and economically and so full of life. Thanks to JLA for letting me get under the skin of Cuba just a little."HF, London
This trip offers so many breathtaking moments. Overall it is the variation of landscape and wealth of history that impresses and spotting varied wildlife.WK, Shoreham-by-Sea
As a first taste of South America with limited annual leave, you couldn't fault this two week itinerary for the amount of ground it covered. It has given me a real appetite to spend more time in Argentina and Chile - I feel like we literally scratched the surface of what these incredible countries have to offer - and I would definitely like to go back and spend more time exploring these two in particular. Our experience of travelling with a JLA guide was absolutely amazing - I would always recommend this.ES, Redhill
Overall the Tangara trip was well structured, if a little hectic moving on every two nights. It achieved its main objectives and we saw fascinating parts of South America that we had long wanted to see. Our guide, was most assiduous, knew the area very well and eased our path considerably. The highlights for us on Tangara were i) The trip to Chiloe, particularly with the services of an excellent nature guide, ii) the visit to Iguazu, iii) Buenos Aries, and iv) of course Rio de Janeiro.TE, Cirencester
Most memorable experience: “Many on this journey, however main ones include :- Both the optional visits / flights - over Angel Falls & day excursion /flight to Kaieteur Falls . Time at Rock View Lodge & seeing the Coq of the Roq in the forest on the journey to Atta Lodge. The catamaran visit to Iles du Salut. Also enjoyed the atmosphere while wandering around Paramaribo.”SN, Belper
