Bocas del Mar
A welcoming and professionally run hotel with chalet-style accommodation and a menu of outdoor activities close to the beach at Boca Chica.
Bocas del Mar Hotel is situated at Boca Chica on the Pacific coast. Boca Chica is the gateway to the Gulf of Chiriquí Marine National Park with its many luxuriant green islands, palm-tree-fringed white beaches and a variety of wildlife.
The property is a 20-minute drive from the paved Pan-American Highway, set on a hilltop in a secluded natural environment. It's on a rocky point, not the beach itself, but pretty coves and sands are easily accessible. It’s smart, up to date, and service orientated, an aspect much appreciated by its guests. The 16 cheerful, Mediterranean-white, chalet-style bungalows have floor-to-ceiling windows from which you can survey the tropical gardens. They have fresh, airy décor, and plenty of comfort and leisure amenities.
The pools are particularly seductive, but if you can drag yourself away from your lounger there are plenty of activities on offer, such as kayaking, horse riding, bird watching and nature hikes. There's a private dock to facilitate beach-hopping among the islands and leisurely, daily scheduled trips in the hotel’s own vessel: fishing, whale watching (Jul-Nov), snorkelling and diving.

Most memorable experience: “Tranquillo bay was a cut above everything else. Staying on Waidup (near Isla Tigre) was also special.”MH, Chiswick
Because of my interest in shipping, the Panama Canal partial transit was fascinating.JB
Highlights: “Locks on the Panama canal and Panamax vessels up close.”MC, Fulham
Most Memorable Moment?: Too hard to choose one. Panama Canal Transit was a lifelong ambition.NA, London
"Bocas del Toro was great fun and frivolous and a great journey there by boat."GS, Bushey
Top experiences in Panama - going through the canal and exploring Panama City and surrounding area. I was surprised to find that Panama is not just the Canal Zone!
We enjoyed all locations which were very diverse and equally memorable.IB, Chesterfield
We didn't realise the partial canal transit would be in such a big boat with loads of other tourists - not a problem, but would have been good for this to be pointed out in advance.NF, Tunbridge Wells
Each part of my trip had a special moment. I loved both the new and old parts of Panama city, but my highlight there was seeing sloths while walking up Cerro Ancon. In Bocas del Toro it was being the only person there on a stunning beach. The best moment though has to be staying at the Canopy Tower and experiencing the wildlife. I'll never forget the sound of the Howler monkeys.TF, Wakefield
"Most memorable was watching mother and baby two-toed sloths from bedroom window at Canopy Tower. Early morning on the roof of Canopy Tower listening to howler monkeys as the sun rises over the forest.”NW, Kidlington
Panama was far more interesting than what we thought it would be, particularly the Museum of Contemporary Art and the Bio Diversity Museum.CY, Heathfield
