18th century conversion with beautiful, rustic gardens and courtyards and a prime location in a quiet yet central spot.
This 18th century building is one of the town's oldest, with white adobe walls and hand-carved beam ceilings. The hotel Cascavieja is located in a quiet spot, yet within easy walking distance of the main square.
The cosy rooms surround a small, tranquil courtyard. Outdoor areas are enchantingly overgrown and rustic with vine-cloaked stonework and antique fountains surrounded by plants.
The décor is in keeping with the building's colonial origins, featuring wooden and wrought iron furniture and finishing. Across the road is the restaurant, serving traditional Mexican dishes.

Highlight?: Calakmul, its a long journey to get there ( 2 hours from Xpujil alone ) so plenty of anticipation, not busy and complete freedom to walk around as opposed to other sites. Did actually see some monkeys in the trees too.DB, Teddington
Specific memorable event: Having climbed up the large pyramid at the Mayan site, within the Calakmul biospere, not only did we love the impressive view across the tree canopy, but we were greeted by the amazing sound of 3 groups of howler monkeys calling to each other across the tree tops. The birdlife there was also wondeful to see. Overall memorable part: the Mexican people - genuinely friendly, helpful and patient.LG, St Albans
Highlights: Palenque site. The beach at TulumJB, Leatherhead
There were many highlights: the beautiful beach on our first morning in Cancun, the boat ride among the flamingos at Celestun, the sight of the Magicians Pyramid at Uxmal and the climb up the Great Pyramid there..We loved the city of Merida, and having a Sunday at leisure there was very well planned by Sophie. We walked the Paseo de Montejo, open only to bikes and pedestrians, visited the Museum of Anthropology, then had a late lunch in Santa Lucia park watching the locals dancing. Later we watched them again in the evening dancing opposite the Cathedral in Plaza Mayor. Great fun, we loved it all. We also has a fantastic visit to Ek Balam on our way to Tulum, which was one on our Mayan Archeological highlights. (So glad we didn't just drop in en route from Cancun to Merida). Tulum was lovely and the transfer to Isla Mujeres by the hotel is complimentary Catamaran service was fantastic.AF, Merriot
We liked the variety of our trip - ancient Mayan ruins, real Mexican towns and people, and beautiful beaches. It was wonderful to access Chichen Itza from the grounds of Mayaland Resort and get in there early and before it was too hot without any crowds. We loved swimming in Dzitnup Cenote.PR
Most memorable experience: The friendliness of the Mexican peopleGW Chertsey
"Many highlights: The views at Uxmal. Waking up with a view of the observatory at Chichen Itza from our hotel bed. The excellent guides. The friendliness of the staff (and impromptu language lessons) at Petit Lafitte."TR, Farnham

We thoroughly enjoyed everything about the holiday but were particularly impressed with the accommodation at the Hacienda VIP and the excursion to Uxmal and Kabah.SS, Liverpool
Most memorable aspect: “All the visits to temples and pyramids. With very knowledgeable and extremely pleasant guidesJB Wandsworth
Most Memorable Moment?: Hard to say as we enjoyed every part of our trip. We loved the mixture of ancient sites and other attractions so we did not feel overwhelmed by one type of attraction.DS, Paisley
Visiting UxmalDS, Ware
Highlight?: The totality of it. Seeing different parts of the country. The mixture of food. ruins and art was just about spot on.KJ, Harlow
JLA definitely know the Latin American market and we have been very satisfied with both the tailor made and small group tour options. Mexico, like other Latin American countries, does not have the same standards of hygiene and accommodation as we are used to in the UK. Travellers should be prepared for and accept this. We felt that JLA had done all they could to ensure that accommodation was of a good standard and that the tour ran smoothly and would have no hesitation in travelling with them again.ML Runcorn
"Most memorable aspects were all the archaeological sites, which we enjoyed immensely. On the whole, we found local people very kind and helpful."DC, Nottingham
My sister summed it up by saying that there was nothing that she would have changed, the holiday was perfect. Mexico was a delight, we had never been before, the people sincerely friendly and helpful, the service as great but everything exceeded expectations. My sister and the children thought that the cenotes were amazing as they were such a surprise but we loved it all.RN, Ascot
Highlights: We went to a small nature reserve (Copalita) near to our hotel in Hualtuco that was really lovely, teaming with wildlife. Monte Alban was very impressive as well.SP,
I loved the mexico city walking tour - really felt part of the city. Great restaurant recommendations too! Also loved everything about San cristobel!MK, London
Highlights 1. Cenotes at Cuzamá - horse drawn cart through countryside to reach them 2. Celestun - flamingoes, lobster and ceviche on the beach 3. Uxmal Ruins- less people than Chichen and no vendors everywhere 4. Tulum Sian Biosphere - walk through Muyil ruins to reach biosphere route to the boat which you hire to cross the lagoon to the the Lazy River floating through the lagoon in natural water currents - stunning...5. Food everywhere we went was amazing; Kind Mexican people esp the Mayans; clean loos (didn't expect it but was often surprised by how clean they were) 6. Hire car gave great flexibility - easy driving and no problems at all.VRR, Sittingbourne
Highlights: Boat trip to Yaxchilan - jungle and ruins were great. Gardens and pool at Hacienda Chichen were lovely. Cuernavaca was a lovely town and we enjoyed Robert Brady museum….San Cristobal - also lovely”CW, London
Magical memories were created
"We feel as if we have a million magical memories that will last forever - sunsets over the Caribbean sea, ruins in the midst of the jungles, seas of pink flamingoes, crocodiles nestling on the banks of the Canyon Del Sumida. We were nervous as non Spanish speakers but we felt so supported without that horrible feeling of being over organized. Thank you again.”LH, Pinner
All of it was good. The actual order of places I visited also coincided with the progression of history, from ancient to more recent. Very well arranged indeed.DB, Birmingham
Mexico is such an interesting country, very diverse. I recommend to read a good guide that could give an overview of the history of Mexico and don't miss the Museum of Anttopology if it is intended to visit the arqueological sites. For those interested in the political history of Mexico, it is a must to see 'the muralistas' e.g Diego Rivera, Siquieros, Tamayo and OroscoCL, Harpenden
Most memorable experiences: "The Archeological sites, the friendly guides and amazing beach in Tulum."LS, Ruislip
“It's impossible to pick any individual aspect; but a number of experiences stood out: the visit to the "voodoo" church at St Juan Chamula (extraordinary and unexpected), the visit to the shrine of the Madonna of Guadalupe on the way to Teotihuacan in Mexico City (similar, and helped understand Mexican history), Palenque (the most beautiful and atmospheric of the pre-hispanic sites), and swimming in the three cenotes at Cuzama near Mérida, which we arranged ourselves.”AR, Gospel Oak
Most Memorable Experience: The visits to sights and cities open our eyes to a culture that is underrated in Europe. Security is perceived as a problem in Mexico. Yes there is a noticeable police presence, in comparison with the UK, but we never felt threatenedMC
It is very difficult as pretty well everything was memorable, but if I have to pick something, then the boat trip along the river to Yaxchilan takes some beating. Weather, scenery, wildlife, excitement of a fast boat, and the archaeological surprises at the end ….RB, Eastleigh
Highlights: Discovering and enjoying the Mexican culture and despite pre visit warnings, being so surprised that Mexico City is nothing like as dangerous a place to visit as I had expected.Cw, Macclesfield
"Mayan sites were really fantastic. Teotihuacan was excellent and Mildred was a very good guide. She enhanced the day."SP, London
The train from El Fuerte to Divisidero was great - good views with the ability to take photographs through open windows, good food, comfortable seats.JDL, St Neots
