Astride the giant coral reef which extends into Belize lie the Bay Islands of Roatán, Utila and Guanaja, characterised by palm-shaded beaches and warm Caribbean waters.
Astride the giant coral reef which extends into Belize lie the Bay Islands of Roatán, Utila and Guanaja. Fringed with palm-shaded beaches and lapped by warm, glass-clear Caribbean waters they attract divers, snorkellers and barefoot holiday-makers in large numbers. The islands have a vivid history. Once the base for European pirate attacks on shipping, they were colonised by Carib Indians, former African slaves, and Garifuna communities, creating today’s cultural melting pot to which Honduran Latino immigrants are now adding their influence. It’s a laid-back ambience, beloved of budget travellers and sun-worshippers alike. On the mainland opposite are a few agreeable resorts: Tela, within reach of glorious beaches, is the most significant.

The weather in Bay Islands and beaches is wide and varied
lass="c-where-to-go__overview__content-text">Imagine idyllic Caribbean islands with sugary white sand beaches surrounded by crystal blue seas, and you’re picturing the Bay Islands off the north coast of Honduras. Famed for diving, the islands are part of the second biggest reef in the world but equally great for a relaxing end of a holiday enjoying the fresh seafood and clear, calm waters. Here the wet season runs from August - January, bringing afternoon showers, while the cooler dry season begins around January and continues until July or August.
