The very friendly Casa Mojanda and organic farm has a secluded feel though it's just ten minutes' drive from the famous highland market town of Otavalo, surrounded by craggy mountains and the racing green foothills of Mount Mojanda.
The property is the culmination of a dream for the American couple who conceived and constructed it using traditional methods and materials: terracotta bricks, adobe walls, red tile floors, eucalyptus roof beams. A stay here really is akin to a visit to a family home – all guests get the warm welcome usually reserved for close friends.
There are ten individual whitewashed bungalows for guests, some with an open fireplace. Each enjoys fabulous views over the surrounding upland scenery. Sitting alongside is a pleasant dining area adorned with antiques and local handicrafts, where home cooked meals are served family style and are based on traditional Ecuadorian and international recipes, with ingredients harvested daily from the inn’s organic kitchen garden.
There is loads to do in the vicinity: options include hikes along ancient tree-lined cobbled pathways to volcanic lakes, horse rides, visits to indigenous villages and craft markets, mountain biking and bird watching. The lodge also has a large selection of films and documentaries available to watch in its video room.
