OUR GUIDE TO the weather in the Mindo and the cloud forest
The cloud forest reserves of Mindo, Mashpi and Bellavista are located at altitudes of between 950m to 2000m and harbour an incredibly bio-diverse flora and fauna. These misty bromeliad and orchid-filled forests, which cling to the steep Andean slopes that reach westward towards the Pacific plains, are a bird watcher’s paradise. They are damp and humid year round but warm with temperatures averaging between 20-24°C. There are a few hours of sunshine most days, and more during the driest months of Jun-Sep although the October-May wet season is considered the best time for bird watching thanks to migratory arrivals and an abundance of flowers for birds to feast on. In the wettest months of February-April it rains most days from the afternoon into the early hours. The dry season, when trees are in fruit, is probably the best time to see mammals and it is also the best time for spotting nocturnal wildlife.
