Casas particulares – homestays
A unique way to get to know the real Cuba: stay in one of these atmospheric and often historic family homes, offering a similar type of accommodation to a Bed & Breakfast.
The homestay concept in Cuba is not dissimilar to that of the bed and breakfast in the UK, except that generally all meals can be taken in the house. The hearty home-made food on offer can often represent the most attractive dining option in town.
But what really differentiates Cuban homestays is, of course, their unique character and the insight they offer into ordinary life in Cuba. Run by a family or couple, casas particulares are legally restricted to just a couple of guest rooms, making the experience very much one of being a guest in a private home. The level of interaction can depend on the owners and of course the guests, but it is sure to offer a more intimate portrait of Cuba than a stay in an ordinary hotel.
The houses themselves can often be extremely charming, occupying historic buildings or bedecked with antique furniture (this being Cuba, it is kept for practical use rather than ornamentation!). Rooms are rudimentary but homely and comfortable with en suite facilities. Read more about them here.

A charming casa in a beautiful location. Our hosts could not have been more helpful and accommodating. The food was plentiful and delicious .HH, London
"Delightful accommodation, which was kept extremely clean. Very friendly hosts, excellent location and great experience."MS, Glasgow
Basita was an incredibly kind lady, who offered us her home and service from the start to end of our stay. The first night's dinner was included at a nearby restaurant atop a hill with stunning views and there were plenty of private spaces in the property opened up for us alone. Also located a little outside of town, which ensured we were free of the tourist trap in the center of town. Basita's husband also arranged tours for us last-minute, which worked out very well.CW, Bishop's stortford
"Vivian and Pablo made us feel welcome, and looked after us well. Yonelkis served us dinner and breakfast, and was a lovely and very friendly man. The location was superb."CB, Swindon
"The rooms were comfortable and the bathrooms small but clean. The air conditioning didn't work well, but there were fans. Basita was a kind and attentive hostess and the breakfast was good and plentiful. Overall we had a lovely stay at her house. We particularly enjoyed sitting on the porch in a rocking chair watching the world go by."SKF, Edinburgh
"Great location a minute's walk from Plaza Mayor and nice rooftop area to relax in the shade or sun. Excellent food served in main house across the road."PW, Norwich

"Staying in a homestay is a must when vising Cuba supposed to stay at Bastita, she could not accommodate for one of the nights so we stayed at her Sons 2 villa down we were not disappointed, food was fantastic some of the best in Cuba!!! Vinales gives you a real insight into the rural life in Cuba with a lot to see."CW, Kingston Upon Thames
Wonderful hosts provided a fantastic welcome. I would recommend them to anyone staying in Trinidad. Good food, great location and My only gripe and it was very minor would be the shower facilities - absence of water pressure.DM Edinburgh

Seeing the real Cuba
“The Vinales homestay - so welcoming and made us feel like we were seeing the real Cuba and Cubans.”SM, Teddington
"We had the best time with Basita, her and her husband were really nice and his Eng was good. He made some really good recommendations and even drove us to the climbing caves."ZEW, London
Vinales Homestay Basita: A comfortable room with air conditioning and 2 small double beds. Walking distance of town centre. Dinner was simple but absolutely delicious and breakfast good and very plentiful. Very welcoming.IC, Guernsey
"Really enjoyable. We thought it was going to be a struggle when we arrived as no English was spoken and we don't speak any Spanish - but we got by with some very amusing gesturing and spanglish! Alex provided an excellent breakfast and we had our own key to come and go as we pleased which was great."SW, Romsey
Vinales Homesay - Basita's Houses: Basita and her husband Jose were more than welcoming and couldn't do enough to make us feel at home. Delicious food cooked by Basita and Jose drove us round the area so we could see all the sights (for a reasonable fee). We weren't too impressed with the town (too busy) but the countryside around Vinales was stunning.PG, London
"Very comfortable and clean and located right in the heart of old Trinidad. It felt more like a small hotel than a home stay as the whole building was converted into 5 guest rooms and Vivian's house was across the road."SKF, Edinburgh
"Dinner on first night and breakfasts amazing!"LD, Beaconsfield
"Martha was absolutely lovely and her 'trust' fridge with drinks was brilliant as we couldn't always find a shop, let alone one with cold drinks! She was very kind eventhough we spoke virtually no Spanish."ZEW, London
Very friendly welcoming family. Our host provided us with extra home cooked snacks and fresh fruit and we had access to a kitchen to make drinks and as much bottled water as we needed. Dinner was excellent with enormous portions . A very pleasant stay.LVK, Sevenoaks
