Cuba: Caribbean Cayes and Coast

Visit Us

Cuba’s exquisite beaches are famous for their unpolluted sugar-white sands and warm, turquoise waters, safe for swimming and water sports. Some beaches have large all-inclusive resort hotels offering only a glimpse of the life led by most Cubans, but there’s also a growing number of secluded, first class properties. Elsewhere there are small cliff-defined coves with pocket-sized beaches hosting smaller hotels. Off the coast, coral atoll islands have been left in their natural state offering a more intimate, private beach experience. The remote western and eastern tips of the island, Pinar del Rio and Baracoa harbour some of the loveliest unspoilt beaches, with a rural backdrop of craggy hills sheltering quaint colonial villages.

A beach wind down on one of the northern coast’s necklet of until-recently undeveloped, palm-dotted coral islands connected to the mainland by causeway: Cayo Ensenachos, Cayo las Brujas and Cayo Santa Maria.

Snorkelling off the cayes or among the rocks of sheltered coves. Cuban waters are particularly clear and glassy, and well populated with tropical marine life.

A stay at Guardalavaca at Playa Esmeralda, is more peaceful and upmarket. Its outlying landscape is picturesque, with rolling palm-forested hills, sugar fields and nature parks.

What our experts say

I recommend Cayo Levisa for a beach getaway. This relatively undeveloped spot, a short ferry ride from the coast, has dazzling powder-white sand and is lapped by glass- clear water which is shallow for miles, especially to the eastern side where it ‘s suitable for children to splash about . The wind often picks up mid afternoon, so any boating activities would be best done in the morning. Otherwise there is not a great amount to do, apart from walk along the beach, eat and drink; but if you are a scuba-diver you can explore the undersea world from the dive centre.
