Costa Rica: Osa Peninsula

Visit Us

At the southern end of Costa Rica’s Pacific coastline, the Osa Peninsula’s rainforest vegetation contrasts with the open pastures of the northern Nicoya Peninsula. Here, in a remote region not easy to navigate in the wet season, there are opportunities for outdoor adventure and getting enveloped by nature. Wildlife reserves have been established throughout this lush region, notably Corcovado National Park, with magnificent biodiversity, sheltering rare species of mammals including the Central American squirrel monkey, white-faced capuchins, ocelots and tapirs. Caimans and crocodiles lurk watchful in the dark lagoons; a rare harpy eagle may circle overhead.

What our experts say

The arrival trip to La Leona Ecologe is one of the best I ever had. The light aircraft deposits you at the isolate airstrip in Carate where the Lodge’s representative is waiting you in a horse-drawn cart. Which looks rather quaint until you realise that your luggage is actually going to travel on it. And you will walk behind it – best to take your shoes off, as this is a 45 minute walk on an empty and endless beach. It feels quite cinematic: all you see is green and then suddenly, semi hidden by the jungle, the tents, the bar and reception come into view. Not only is this lodge 5 mins'walk from the entrance to Corcovado National Park – the biggest in the country- but is also surrounded by vegetation of such vibrant colour that you feel as if all is going to burst into some kind of psychedelic dream!
