Chile: Torres del Paine National Park

Visit Us

Torres del Paine National Park in southern Patagonia is the pinnacle of Chile’s natural landscapes, fast becoming one of the world’s most popular places for walking holidays. Cuernos del Paine is a granite massif which has been sliced apart into needle-sharp spires by glaciers. Beyond are the vertical triple towers of the Torres del Paine. Wind-battered grasslands lead up to sheltered glacial valleys with flowery meadows; torrential rivers surging with ice are interlaced with glassy lagoons. Wildlife abounds everywhere, from geese to guanaco; condors and puma may be spotted, especially in the low winter season from April to October.

What our experts say

I have been to Torres del Paine National Park in Patagonia many times over the past 30 years. From a wilderness with no accommodation bar the odd refuge and a few gravel roads, penetrated only by back packers and climbers, it is now a popular destination for all lovers of extreme natural landscapes. Nowadays there are smart hotels with spas but I recommend you get out and about on the trails as much as possible. My most abiding memory is of a spot on the walk to the Valle Francés where you are surrounded on three sides by perpendicular walls of granite spliced by silvery blue glaciers, all overlooked by the cathedral spires of the Paine massif.  A humbling sight.
