The Andean crossing between the Atacama desert and Salta in the Argentine Andean foothills is the highest and most elemental pass, where sun-bleached arid rock gives way to ice-clad skeletal peaks. A friendly, laid-back but cultured colonial city. Salta, with its graceful baroque architecture and stunning, colourful cathedral, is a great contrast to the vast capital, Buenos Aires. Around it are communities and vestiges of the country’s indigenous population, whose crafts and agricultural practices survive to this day.
From there you’ll fly to the sub-tropical rainforest of Iguazú National Park and survey and explore the monumental Iguazú Falls; 276 separate cascades thundering over a granite precipice. At either end of the holiday there’s time in a historically significant, sophisticated city – Santiago and Buenos Aires.

What our clients say
97% of our clients rated their experience with us as Excellent or Good.
Group tour was all memorable - for all the right reasons! A trip with JLA is a trip with the local experts. They respond quickly to challenges such as FCO advice not to visit an area and know the local people who can make the holiday really memorable. One other comment about Colombia - the people we encountered, of all ages, in the streets, shops, hotels etc were friendly, welcoming and the most polite I have met anywhere in the world!HR, Brentford
How, if at all, could your holiday have been improved? "I could not imagine that my holiday could have been better."
"Cuba is changing, so go now before it's too late. Take in the Music and Dance on every Street Corner. Beautiful people, and a hard won Socialist ideal."CA, London
We enjoyed all our excursions. Rio was a great start. The views from the Sugar Loaf were quite spectacular. Likewise the trips at both sides of the Iguazu Falls provided stunning scenery and of course Machu Picchu which even surpassed our epectations. Our first optional excursion was fascinating - up Corcovado. We also thoroughly enjoyed our helicopter trip over the falls, and the day trip to Potosi - a different and very interesting trip with lots to see.We also enjoyed visiting Moon Valley with its varied and interesting formations and in contrast going in to Lima. Every trip was worthwhile and enjoyable.JR, Swansea
Really it was the whole experience. A well-organised trip with lots of interesting things to see and do with people we got on well with and a knowledgeable, friendly, helpful guide.
Most memorable?? - Too many to mention, just Aisen itself really.JH, Swindon
It is an itinerary which covers different environments and allows interaction with the wonderful Colombian people plus time to see what is in each place.BD, Hartlepool
The brilliant weather from start to finish. Blue sky and sunshine at Moreno glacier, and of course the various animals. Truly lovely group of people and the tour leader was excellent.JM, Minehead
This trip offers so many breathtaking moments. Overall it is the variation of landscape and wealth of history that impresses and spotting varied wildlife.WK, Shoreham-by-Sea
Machu Picchu was amazing and exceeded our expectations. But the trip was full of other great highlights, which came as more of a surprise - Arequipa and Cusco were lively cities with impressive colonial architecture and plenty of things to do. The trip to the Uros Islands was magical and it was amazing to see how people live on islands made of nothing more than reeds. The train journeys were wonderful.DL, Twickenham
This was our second trip with JLA and, as with the first, we had a fantastic trip and a wonderful experience. JLA's knowledge and experience of Latin America shone through in the organisation of the trip as a whole, and all the individual trips and options. We would whole-heartedly recommend JLA to anyone contemplating a trip to Latin America and we will definitely be booking another tour with JLA in the future.
An exceptional trip which really gave us a feel for the countries we visited. A special mention should go to our tour leader - he was outstanding.EJ, Chorley
Most memorable experience? - Seeing the eruption of volcano El Fuego at Antigua - though from a distance - but we still saw the red lava. The unspoilt Pacific Coast near Leon with the turtle conservation centre and sunset beach. The jungle Chaa Creek resort with the toucans. The wonderful city of Leon.CB, Beckenham
"I saw hummingbirds, swam in the Caribbean, had a ride in a 1952 bright pink chevrolet and had guava and pineapple for breakfast. There was music, fun and sunshine everywhere. Our guide wanted us to meet her favourites - musicians, craftsmen, service people, who all had passion."PB, Romsey
Education about the history and current situation of the country. Also enjoyed seeing many distinct parts of the country less visited by tourists such as Baracoa.GW, Crieff
I loved the beauty of the Solentiname Islands and Corn Islands. But my favourite part of the trip was definitely Leon as there is so much fascinating recent history.FW, Leamington Spa
This tour brings Mexico's cultural and historical diversity vividly to life, and is an excellent introduction to this important Latin American country.JF, Cambridge
It was a wonderful trip. It was all good. In saying what I say next that is not to denigrate anything else. However, here we were at the vineyards outside Mendoza. It is a beautiful day weather-wise. We have had a fine tour of the vineyard and winery. The vineyard is itself beautiful and peaceful. Now we are in a lovely modern building for the 'lecture' and tastings. I am feeling very happy. Can it get any better? Yes. I look beyond the lecturer out of the window and there I see the beauty of the vineyard and 'just' behind that of the high Andes. Breathtaking!IM, London
I have been travelling for over half a century but his was my first organised tour and it was wonderful. As I said on my return I would go again next week if my diary was not full, I needed a rest and was not minded to spend as much again so soon.
Though I've travelled a fair bit in Central and South America, this was a very different experience and so was memorable throughout for that difference. Other trips have focused on Mayan and Incan civilisations, on Spanish Colonial cities and towns and this trip was much more about the scenery and wildlife. The cities were vibrant and very European in feel without much evidence of colonialism. The skies were huge, the scenery spectacular, and the wildlife a joy.CG, Hexham
What a fabulous trip - we were very well looked after all the way and our guide was wonderful - we could not praise him more highly. He made sure we had enough money wherever we went, changing money when needed, showing us the best places to get a taste of whichever town, city, or countryside we were visiting, giving us agreat introduction to local culture and customs, ensuring our safety always. The places we visited were amazing - and very different from one another , so the tour together gave us a real insight into the diversity exisiting in the areas we touched. The tour was action packed, but necessary to see so much in so short a time - a truly wonderful introduction to a part of Chile and a taste of Argentina.CW, Ilkley
This really is Extremes of Chile going from desert conditions to frozen mountains. He prepared for some tiring travelling - and some stupendous scenery.DR, Newcastle-upon-Tyne
"This was our third holiday with JLA and once again they did not disappoint."PP, Stafford
The birds were wonderful - especially the time spent looking for, and finding, the Resplendent Quetzal. Also the camaraderie and the laughs with the group members, the tour leader and the driver.FW, Dornoch
This was our third trip with JLA - all of them excellent. Alcion is a fantastic tour - to experience 6 countries in 3 weeks was something we could never do on our own. Our guide was outstanding, the itinerary was superb - the whole trip was something we will always remember.AT, London
Many good memories - arriving at Macchu Picchu was something we had wanted to do for many years, so was probably the most memorable.CA, Wembley
Most memorable experience? - It was the feeling that it had been planned by people at JLA who love the continent and want their customers to enjoy it too. There was great selection, variation and pacing. Above all, the quality of the experience was exceptional - from our consultant right from the outset through to tour leader and a host of local guides, drivers and hotels. A 101 organisational arrangements went like clockwork and the highest levels of professionalism and quality were always evident. So THANK YOU, JLA for our best holiday anywhere, anytime - WE WILL BE BACK !!!RH, Havant
The Jungle was just fabulous, didn't quite know what to expect but it exceeded expectations!...Having travelled with you before and receiving excellent treatment & value we returned and you once again lived up to your reputation and promise. Exceeded our high expectations...the experience of a lifetime.GH, Morpeth
Everything went smoothly, the flights were good as were the transfer vehicles. The bus to Puerto Natales was fine as were the minibuses for longer trips. I enjoyed the boat trips and the I really liked the zodiac trip on the Rio Serrano.PM, Wirral
Where do we start? 25 condors at Colca Canyon, vicuna, llama and alpaca at every turn, fabulous weather, the surprising majesty of the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu and the amazing Iguassu Falls in full flow after heavy rain in the interior. 6 equally wonderful experiences.MR, St Albans
A very well organised and fascinating holiday. An excellent tour leader who helped make the experience very special. Thank you all for all your efforts on our behalf.
The colourful people of Guatemala, the beautiful scenery at Lake Atitlan and the wonderful atmosphere of Antigua City.JR, Prudhoe
We have travelled with JLA on several occasions throughout South America. JLA may not be the cheapest tour operator, but booking with JLA means peace of mind, expert and helpful advice, reliable pick ups and travel arrangements and expert and informative tour leaders and local guides. A holiday should be free of worry and JLA take care of everything!CR, Bath
The whole holiday was full of memorable moments. I loved walking around quirky Valparaiso with it's colourful houses and graffiti, the scenery in the Atacama, seeing the Milky Way there at night, the Tatio Geysers at sunrise, seeing Orsono emerge from the clouds in Puerto Varas, Torres del Paine Massif and the changing sky and clouds there. Watching Chilean Gauchos seen close up herding sheep on the road back to Punta Arenas. Realising you are looking at the Magellan Straits with views of Tierra del Fuego in the background when you'd learnt about it in 'O' level geography 50 years ago and were finally there! The wonderful Andean Lakes Crossing from Puerto Varas to Bariloche and the gift of perfect weather during the crossing with cloudless skies and sunshine all the way. The views at Bariloche and walking around Buenos Aires, the Casa Rosada and Eva Peron's burial place and just the street life in general. And also the lovely, hospitable, polite, friendly Chilean locals, always ready to help. Just a brilliant holiday.SLH, Poulton-le-Fylde
Looking over Machu Picchu from a high point on the site, Watching the stars from the hot spring baths in Colca, the alpacas, drinking pisco sours!HS, Borehamwood
