The large Hotel Tropical Manaus at the edge of the jungle is located in the upmarket neighbourhood of Punta Negra. It's a 15-minute drive from the centre and in close proximity to the newly renovated riverside promenade. There’s a beach in low water and views over the Rio Negro to the rainforest beyond –particularly spectacular at sunset.
Set over three sprawling floors amidst overgrown tropical grounds, the Tropical is a huge, self-contained holiday resort, with shops, restaurants, a bar, swimming pools, a beauty salon, bikes, a jogging track and tennis courts. There is even a small zoo in the grounds.
There is a sense of somewhat faded grandeur about the place: in its heyday the Tropical was an icon of Manaus. Now things are beginning to look a little rough around the edges and it’s clear that the hotel no longer meets the 5-star standards to which it still aspires. Having said that, it is an excellent choice if you are taking the MV Tucano cruise which leaves from the quay at the edge of the grounds, or if you want to stay outside the city. The hotel is gradually being refurbished; we only use the remodelled rooms, which have polished laminate or wood floors and bright, attractive décor.
