Go wildlife-spotting in the Cerrado

Venture on a wildlife spotting safari in the Brazilian savannah to spot maned wolves, deer, anteaters and a kaleidoscope of exotic birds.

The Grande Sertão Veredas National Park protects and conserves a subtly beautiful landscape of whispering grasslands, studded with shy flora and interspersed with rocky outcrops. Sheltering here, and in the blossoming copses of dry forest, jade-hued rivers and waterfalls, is an abundance of wildlife, featuring among its mammals pampas deer, emus, armadillo, anteaters and the star of the show, the endangered maned-wolf.

Caimans laze on the riverbanks, perhaps easier to spot as you embark on a guide safari by jeep, kayak, bicycle or on foot from the friendly Pousada Trijuncão. Night-time safaris are especially magical. Bird-watching is a special delight: sightings of endangered nightjars, tinamou, blue finches and dazzling macaws are common. During your stay, you can visit the pousada’s conservation breeding ground, including the endearing tortoise nursery, and learn about the Pousada’s initiatives in the struggle to preserve this pristine environment as development and agriculture encroach.
