Argentina

Argentina is a vast country where so much of the natural landscape is on a huge scale, ranging from sub-tropical jungle and desert canyons to frozen ice-caps. The tumultuous waterfalls cradled in rainforest at Iguazú are probably the most dramatic and awe-inspiring on the planet, attracting visitors from all over the world.

Beyond the infinite skies, shimmering glaciers and horizon-bending pampas, this is the cradle of the tango and a producer of fine wines. Its capital, Buenos Aires, is one of Latin America’s most stylish; its people, cultured and welcoming. This heritage, forged by forged by waves of immigrants (including Italians, English and Welsh), is unique.

Argentina’s tourist infrastructure is comprehensive: the accommodation, transport and excursions are of a high standard. There’s a well organised network of national parks for adventure in the open air and the profusion of wildlife is striking – mammals, reptiles and birds abound in marshes, rainforest, windswept plains and along the Patagonian coast.

Our insider tips for Argentina

Konrad M

Marvelling upwards at the triple skyscraper-high Iguazú Falls from a boat trip to where the foaming water crashes into the river below: warning, you’ll get wet, but a more exhilarating experience is hard to find.

Sarah

Savouring a slab of sirloin and bottle of rich red Malbec on a sunny patio in the revitalised port district of Puerto Madero in the heart of Buenos Aires.

Caroline Maber

Hiking the trails at Fitz Roy in Patagonia. Few regions anywhere in the world of glaciated mountains and crystal lagoons reward the walker with so many incredible panoramic views.

David

Exploring the richest area of Argentina’s native heritage in the rainbow canyons of the country’s Andean northwest, its modest adobe indigenous villages complementing the gracious baroque of a necklet of colonial towns.

Mary Anne

Walking on the beach on the Valdez Peninsula, eyeballing vast sea elephants as they yawn and bawl, whales breaching out at sea, and penguins nesting in city-sized rookeries.

We loved all of it, we really enjoyed the scenery of Humahuaca Gorge and the drive to Cafayate.  Iguazu falls are incredible also and a definite highlight....We found our whole holiday experience excellent.  It was nice to be able to see so much in 2 weeks whilst still feeling relaxed as we were looked after so well by all our guides.  The personal itinerary and help we received made a huge difference to us and we were impressed by the standard of all our hotels.  The only problem was that we wished we had longer so we could of seen more.

It was all highlights but Iguassu falls from Argentina and Brazil were really amazing.  We were fortunate to be there when the water volume and power of the falls were especially high (which outweighed the occasional heavy rain by far).

    Beautiful country

"The weather was very kind to us and every glacier, view and the falls were stunningly beautiful. I loved being in the hotel at Bariloche sitting on the terrace overlooking the lake. It is impossible for us to put one memorable moment as every part of Argentina that we went to was beautiful.”
