Argentina is a vast country where so much of the natural landscape is on a huge scale, ranging from sub-tropical jungle and desert canyons to frozen ice-caps. The tumultuous waterfalls cradled in rainforest at Iguazú are probably the most dramatic and awe-inspiring on the planet, attracting visitors from all over the world. No matter how you want to spend your time, a holiday to Argentina is an unforgettable experience.

Beyond the infinite skies, shimmering glaciers and horizon-bending pampas, this is the cradle of the tango and a producer of fine wines. Its capital, Buenos Aires, is one of Latin America’s most stylish; its people, cultured and welcoming. This heritage, forged by waves of immigrants (including Italians, English and Welsh), is unique.

Argentina’s tourist infrastructure is comprehensive: the accommodation, transport and excursions are of a high standard. There’s a well-organised network of national parks for adventure in the open air and the profusion of wildlife is striking – mammals, reptiles and birds abound in marshes, rainforest, windswept plains and along the Patagonian coast.

At Journey Latin America, we have a fantastic selection of Argentinean holidays to suit all travellers. Whether you’re a solo traveller , looking for your dream family holiday , or want to join a group tour , you’ll find the perfect holiday for you.

Our insider tips for Argentina

It is hard to imagine the scale of the mighty Iguazú Falls, a vast complex of frothing cascades fringed by tropical rainforest. The view from the Brazilian side gives the best panoramic view of the full extent of these magnificent falls, whilst the Argentine side is where you get the closest to the thunderous Devils' Throat. Both are a must, but for a unique perspective then take a boat trip to the base of the falls: you'll get a bit wet but the exhilarating experience makes it well worth it!

Try to stay in Buenos Aires on a weekend. Bohemian San Telmo is great fun on Sunday mornings when the weekly vibrant flea and antiques market takes over the cobbled stone streets and the small quaint plazas are filled with people enjoying live music, tango dancers and local artists exhibit their works. As the market winds down, head to the nearby revitalised port district of Puerto Madero in the heart of Buenos Aires to savour a slab of sirloin and a bottle of rich red peppery Malbec. The sunny riverside promenade makes for a pleasant place to walk off a satisfying meal.

If there is one Patagonian highlight not to be missed, it is Perito Moreno Glacier in the Los Glaciares national park. A truly awe-inspiring sight, the glacier covers an area of 250km², is five kilometres wide and towers 60m above the icy surface of the dazzling turquoise lake it feeds into. It is one of the few glaciers on the planet that is still growing, and what a breathtaking spectacle it is to watch and hear as the glacier creaks and groans and thunderous shards of falling ice the size of apartment blocks drop and slide into the waters below.

Explore the less visited northwest of the country, where Argentina's ancient Andean heritage is most evident today. Rainbow coloured mountains and earthy red canyons covered in giant cacti provide an incredibly scenic backdrop to modest indigenous adobe villages, smaller Baroque colonial towns and a premier high-altitude wine producing area.  For the more independently minded, the area lends itself particularly well to self-drive holidays as the roads are generally in good condition and amazing photo opportunities seem to pop up at every corner.

What our experts say

Argentina is  a country of so many contradictions. Not only the extremes of climate and landscapes, but also in the character of the people: passion is a cliché but well applied to Argentines, who have an opinion on everything. In my experience, at the same time as stating their views forcefully they are some of the kindest and most welcoming and communicative people in Latin America, and entertaining to boot.
