As part of her university year abroad Hannah was based in Montevideo, Uruguay, teaching English and learning Spanish. She made the most of her holidays and weekends by travelling throughout laid-back Uruguay but also heading further afield into neighbouring Argentina, Brazil and Chile. Indeed, cites hiking in Patagonia’s and the Atacama’s rugged national parks as perhaps her most memorable experiences, closely followed by her soft spot for Buenos Aires.

Before returning to the UK, Hannah travelled through Bolivia’s spectacular Uyuni Salt Flats and into Peru, where she found the indigenous cultures fascinating. Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands provided a wildlife experience beyond her wildest dreams and Colombia, with its vibrant music, stunning beaches and warm welcoming people a perfect send off from the continent she was now truly in love with. So when Hannah joined Journey Latin America after graduating, she already had a wealth of travel experience to share with her clients and colleagues in the Tailor Made Department.

My favourite place in Latin America

My favourite place in Latin America is a little place called Cabo Polonio in Uruguay, which offers a completely unique experience. It’s a small, hippy town with no electricity that is only reached by 4x4 over sand dunes. The stars here are the best I have ever seen, as there is no light pollution at all – if you’re visiting, make sure it’s not during a full moon. To add to the magic it is an incredible place to see bioluminescence, the glow-in-the-dark plankton which makes the sand sparkle and lights up the sea when the waves crash.

My top tips

1.

Make the most of the food in Lima. The Peruvian capital is beginning to get its reputation as one of the world’s leaders in gastronomy. Try some sushi, or Asian fusion dishes, as well as plenty of ceviche.

2.

In Bogotá, dedicate an afternoon to taking the cable car up to Monserrate for great views over the city.

3.

If you are going to Salta, make sure you try the local empanadas. I have tried them all over South America and the empanadas salteñas are by far the tastiest.
