Fiona has always had a love of languages: following on from her degree in French, she decided to add Spanish to her linguistic portfolio and thought, what better way to learn a living language than to spend time in the countries where it is spoken?
Not for her though a job in a bar in Spain: she chose to pick up her backpack and travel through Latin America, a continent she had always yearned to visit. She spent a total of nine months exploring Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador and Colombia. This was not just a tick-box tour of the tourist highlights: she really got under the skin of the different cultures on the continent, notably living and working in Bolivia’s Andean city Cochabamba, where she spent four months volunteering with an NGO. In fact, on her first weekend in that country, she went on a camping trip to attend a rural religious festival in the mountains and soon after arriving was invited to join a wedding reception.
She came back to the UK bursting with anecdotes such as this, an enthusiast for the many varieties of South American music, dance, exotic cuisine and ever-improving wine. She was immediately keen to put her acquired knowledge and experience to good use, so we were delighted to welcome her to the JLA family.
