Annerys Hockley

Travel Consultants
Annerys qualified as an engineer in her native Cuba before retraining in travel and tourism, an industry in which she has remained ever since. Part of our Tailor-made Holidays team since 2001, she has a wealth of Latin American travel experience thanks to her frequent visits to Central and South America. Being Cuban, it should be no surprise that she can often be found tearing up the dance floor with her impressive salsa moves. Indeed, it is this passion for Latin music that makes Brazil, and in particular the vibrant colonial Salvador da Bahia, her favourite South American country. When it comes to scenery and the great outdoors she rightly thinks that Chile and Argentina takes some beating, particularly Torres del Paine National Park. For nature, she feels the Galápagos Islands are unbeatable.

Fittingly for such a keen traveller, Annerys is a very skilled linguist speaking not only English and Spanish, but also Portuguese, Italian, French and a smattering of Polish.

My favourite place in Latin America

I love to return to Cuba whenever I can and I take a lot of pride in introducing our clients to my beautiful home country. Elsewhere in Latin America, I was bowled over by the wildlife of the Pantanal, I also love Argentina and the Sacred Valley in Peru.

My top tips

1.

Whether cultural, artistic, musical or religious, Cuban festivals are always colourful, lively, and – above all – fun! If you want to experience a Cuban fiesta for yourself, luckily you’ll have many chances, as the Cuban festival calendar is so packed that whenever you visit there is bound to be something going on.

2.

If you enjoy Cuban music then while in Havana make sure to stop at the brightly painted alley Callejon de Hammel where several rumba groups play on Sundays.

3.

To see a different side to Cuba, visit the Ciénaga de Zapata, the country’s largest wetland and wildlife sanctuary - well worth visiting if you enjoy nature and particularly so if you are a birdwatcher.
