.Hato Piñero is set in the High Llanos, a vast floodplain rich in flora and fauna. With 350 species of bird and over fifty mammal species, the region is one of the most rewarding for wildlife-viewing in South America.
Hato Piñero is reached by road from Caracas - a 410km (5-6 hour) drive over rolling hills, to the remote High Llanos. It has a landing strip, and it is possible to charter a small plane - about an hour from Caracas.
Excursions to view the wildlife of the surrounding area are included. Birds such as toucan, egrets, ibises, hoatzins and curassows as well as anacondas, caimans and iguanas are often seen. Native mammals include anteaters, armadillos, giant otters, the elusive jaguar, howler monkeys and capybaras - the world's largest rodent.
The mode of transport for excursions vary - by foot, navigating through the creeks by boat, or on horseback - this is, after all, cowboy country - or as this picture shows, by open-sided jeep.
Our comment
"Simple but good. Food is fresh local produce, served at trestle tables with a white tablecloth. Bird watchers especially will be entranced" Claire Milner, Client Information Manager
