Not only is this award-winning property located in one of the most magical natural environments in Peru, it is on the doorstep of the continent's most celebrated and sought-after destination: the Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu. To get there, take the train from Cusco or the Sacred Valley of the Incas: either the comfortable Vistadome with its huge windows or the ultra-luxurious Hiram Bingham service.
The utterly charming hotel Inkaterra Machu Picchu, perched on the banks of the spirited River Urubamba in a private tropical forest reserve, combines perfectly rustic earthiness with comfort and luxury.
Rooms and suites housed in country-style white-washed cottages have wide, wood- beamed bedrooms with open fires, and alpaca-wool blankets and unassuming Andean motifs give the atmosphere a flavour of Inca culture. The warm ochre and russet colours and occasional candles in the public areas enhance the welcoming cosiness. The spa offers natural treatments inspired by regional therapies, and includes an Andean sauna. The à la carte food served in the delightful restaurant, with valley views, is very imaginative.
Guided jungle walks along the hummingbird and orchid trails and dawn bird-watching excursions are included in the price.
Our Comment
One of our favourite favourites! The peace and tranquillity of its location is also its strength, well away from the tourist buses and yet on the edge of bustling Aguas Calientes, brimming with little bars and artisan markets
