Chile: Lake District: Campo Aventura

A top choice for an intimate, informal wilderness experience with friendly English-speaking hosts. Deep among the forested mountainous crests and valleys in northern Patagonia, far from any large town or tourist infrastructure at the junction of Rio Cochamo and Relconcavi Fjord, Campo Aventura offers outdoor activities such as boat trips, trekking and cycling; although its speciality is horse-riding.

The base for exploring the estate, the rustic Riverside Lodge, has a fabulous setting within the the forested Cochamó Valley, east of Puerto Montt. The property is most attractive – traditional-style Patagonian wood shingle buildings set amid pretty flowery gardens and linked by raised boardwalks

It’s an intimate place: one pavilion houses the 3 guest rooms (private facilities) and the kitchens. A second pavilion contains the dining room. Adjacent is the owners’ house, and a barbecue area. The South African proprietors and their family live on the property and act as hosts making for a welcoming, English-speaking estancia-style ambience. The presence of their sons adds to the very family-friendly atmosphere and Campo Aventura is a good choice for families in the Chilean summer months.

There’s an abundance of guided activities to choose from – horse-riding treks; vigorous hikes; slow walks; kayaking with dolphins; biking down volcanoes; visits with local families; a swaying hammock under the trees; or just a good book by a warm stove.  Meals are a highlight of a stay at Campo Aventura with home-made breads, traditional cazuelas (stews), and light, fresh cuisine, along with a small selection of wines and soft drinks

Guides are appointed as volunteers and on a seasonal basis – usually young  students from Europe or North America..

Our Comment

The idea is to get out and enjoy the area, so there isn’t a lot to do within the lodge itself but Campo Aventura’s setting is idyllic: a stone’s throw from the banks of the Rio Cochamó, and with a gorgeous backdrop of granite, snow-covered mountains – the entrance to La Junta Valley.
