Chile: Atacama Desert: explora en Atacama

The Atacama desert, at first sight harsh and inhospitable, was in fact home to a thriving pre-Columbian culture, of which many vestiges remain to this day. It stretches down the western flank of the Andes from Peru to northern Chile and has the reputation of being the driest in the world.

The small oasis town of San Pedro de Atacama is the main starting point for trips into the Atacama Desert with its dramatic and varied landscapes: vast sand dunes, glistening white expanses of salt flats, bubbling geysers and hot springs, rugged canyons and volcanoes

explora en Atacama is situated within a stone’s throw of snow-capped volcanoes, shimmering salt plains, the Andes and some of the world’s most advanced astronomical research centres. With all this and more on its doorstep, the explora has something for everyone, including couples and families. Atacama is the ultimate destination for those looking for both adventure and natural beauty.

Situated in moonscape surroundings, the explora lodge in Atacama offers a multitude of activities such as climbing and trekking, horse-riding and cycling, as well as less strenuous pastimes  exploring pre-Inca ruins, or simply relaxing in the hotel grounds and enjoying the spectacular scenery.

The explora lodge has something to offer for everyone - from families, individuals and groups to the most adventure-seeking travellers. Your hotel stay includes a number of excursions per day, graded according to their length and difficulty. The multi-lingual tour leaders tailor their itineraries to the interests and fitness of the guests. And don't worry you don't need to be a mountain climber or intrepid explorer to enjoy the local surroundings and the excursions and activities the explora has to offer.

Other trips offered by explora include horse riding in the sand dunes, archaeological tours and sunset hikes to the Moon Valley, with its beautiful sandstone rock formations and striking colours at dawn and dusk.

This is totally unpretentious luxury where you can hack across salt flats on a mountain bike or relax by a pool watching probably the best sunset you'll ever see.

A stay can be combined with the explora en Patagonia located in the Torres del Paine National Park, or the explora en Rapa Nui located on Eatser island.

What you say:

The Atacama was the most amazing place in the world -the hotel was excellent. We were concerend about the trip with a 5 year old but should not have been. The guide was particularly good, keeping a watchful eye on Tom all the time so we could relax and enjoy the excursions thoroughly.
