Uyuni: Luna Salada Hotel

This small, isolated and utterly magical hotel, built entirely of locally-mined salt blocks, overlooks the Salar de Uyuni salt flats from a low bluff – it’s as if it’s on the edge of another planet.

The walls and floors  of this extraordinary property are of salt crystals (except the bathrooms, which are tiled...) and  shimmer in the strong sunlight; it’s almost like being inside a wedding cake.

The modest guestrooms rooms all have heaters, electric blankets and cosy bedspreads too. The rooms are built along a long corridor; rooms are on one side and each have a sitting area which overlooks the salt flat on the other side of the corridor. These areas are fashioned in an interesting style with big bay windows giving wonderful views. Furniture is mostly made of salt and covered with cushions and Bolivian textiles; one of them even has a hammock, others have Rattan chairs.

Our Comment

Considering the remoteness, both food and service are very good, and the restaurant windows afford panoramic views over the white "lake" below. By the way, the name means "salty moon" - nothing to do with salad, which is ensalada in Spanish.
