Huechahue is a self-sufficient working farm, with up to 800 head of Hereford cattle, belonging to an old Anglo-Argentine family. Huechahue is a rider's paradise; if you dream of living the life of the gaucho, horse riding with sheepskin and saddle among the cattle on a typical Andean ranch, then Huechahue is the place to do it.
The estancia is in the rolling foothills of the eastern Argentine cordillera, and has views of the snowcapped perfect cone of Volcan Lanin. Huechahue is about 45 mins' drive from the airport at San Martin de los Andes.
While beginners are welcome, we think the Huechahue is ideal for clients who already have some riding experience. Most of our clients stay on the estancia for 3 to 5 nights, combining daily rides in its rugged surroundings with spells of relaxation. For the more adventurous, a longer stay can incorporate a 3-day camping-based pack trip into the Andes, which departs on set days. On these, you'll ride into magnificent Lanín National Park, where native araucaria (monkey puzzle) forests adorn the slopes of a snow-capped volcano.
In addition to horseriding, fly-fishing for trout and other water-based activities can be organised. The area is a prime location for birdwatching, and there are some rewarding hikes and ancient Mapuche Indian caves to visit.
All in all, Huechahue offers the rider a complete experience of staying on an estancia including enjoying a typical argentine barbeque or asado.
Our Comment
Experienced riders will feel most at home here; there is ample opportunity to gallop with the gauchos across wide open spaces.
