Zacatecas: Hotel Quinta Real

The hotel Quinta Real provides a unique base in which to relax and enjoy Zacatecas - a city with the tranquil atmosphere of a rural town. The streets are a joy to wander during the day, or at night when many of the city's facades are floodlit. Singing and dancing are commonplace, and you may stumble across an impromptu concert in one of the many shady plazas.

The centrepiece of an array of impressive colonial buildings is the stunning baroque cathedral. Other highlights include a tour of the old silver mine, taking the cable car for a spectacular overview of the city, and visiting its numerous museums.

The hotel itself is a former bullring, 10 mins' walk from the centre, and has been converted into one of Mexico's most prestigious places to stay. The original steps of the ring still remain, and the entrance is framed by the arches of a 16th century aqueduct.

There are large rooms in the hotel, the majority overlook a pleasant shady courtyard area to the rear of the arena. All are equipped with cable TV, CD/video player and marble bathroom, with some suites also having a Jacuzzi tub. There is also a good restaurant, an atmospheric cellar bar and several stylish boutiques.

Our Comment

This is a hotel with a difference. The final bullfight was held in 1979. In 1989 it was converted into this magnificent hotel. The hotel is also overlooked by the very impressive El Cubo colonial aquaduct.
