Mexico: Yucatán: La Mision de Fray Diego

The former convent La Mision de Fray Diego is now a small, secluded and luxurious property close to the centre of Mérida. its décor is in keeping with its history, with religious paintings and artefacts scattered around, softened with flowers and pastel shades.

It's a hidden haven in a rather grim, dilapidated street. The former convent, was converted into a hotel fewer than 10 years ago, it is only a couple of blocks from the centre, but you wouldn’t guess there could be anything this peaceful and exclusive when you start off down the street.

It is now a top of the range, intimate property – it even seems as if the aura of the convent has not yet worn off, as all the staff seem to speak in hushed voices, and there are still a few religious paintings and symbols around.

It has rooms and suites with high ceilings, dark wood and wrought iron furnishings, and antique paintings. All have cable TV, minibar and spacious private bathrooms. Suites have French windows leading onto a private terrace and private Jacuzzis. You may choose to eat in the airy restaurant or in the shade of the garden courtyard, or there are numerous local eateries nearby. There is also a small swimming pool and sun terrace.

Our Comment

This is a secluded, luxurious small hotel – it even seems as if it hasn’t yet worn off the aura of the convent, as all the staff seem to speak in hushed voices, and there are still a few religious paintings and symbols around.
