Mexico: Yucatán: Casa del Balam

The small and friendly Casa del Balam is situated just 3 minutes’ walk from the laurel-lined central plaza, facing the Opera House. Its central position is convenient for visiting the attractions of Mérida and there are many open-air cafes in the vicinity.

This economical hotel is a converted colonial house, with a courtyard in the middle and a 6-storey modern block at the back. It has  air-conditioned rooms and 3 very spacious suites, 2 with balconies overlooking the street.

Refurbishment has seen the installation of soundproofed windows, to filter out the inevitable street noise below. The decoration is classy but homely throughout, with heavy dark colonial furniture, wrought iron beds and marble-effect tiled floors adding a touch of grandeur. A live pianist accompanies restaurant diners in the evening.

The 'L' shaped swimming pool has a small sun terrace with loungers and lush foliage, affording unusual privacy for such a central location. There is free WIFI throughout the hotel.

Our Comment

It's a beautiful family-run hotel. Although it has as many as 57 rooms on 6 floors (there are 2 lifts), it feels quite small and intimate. I particularly like the central courtyard with stone carved fountain and lots of lush green plants.
