Tiny, English-speaking Belize, which oozes laid-back Caribbean charm, is a delightful place to travel as an individual, couple, with friends or your family. The beaches are famously lovely but inland is a mountainous area of pristine forest which is ideal for active adventures.
The delightful jungle hideaway, the Lodge at Chaa Creek, owned by an Anglo-American couple, is set deep within a valley within a large private area of lush rainforest, close to the picturesque Macal River. The atmosphere is extremely peaceful and relaxing, and service is exemplary.
The accommodation is particularly attractive for families, with thatched cottages and villas scattered throughout the grounds, offering space and privacy.
You can just relax in the flower filled gardens around the new infinity pool, or in the spa, but if any members of your family are inclined to explore there are loads of organised activities led by naturalist guides. Choose between a canoe trip down the river, a rural ride on horse-back or mountain-bike to nearby Mayan ruins, nature trails and a tour of the butterfly farm.
Other adventures include birdwatching, canopy zip-lining and cave canoeing. Youcan stay breakfast only, half board or on a full board basis where you can just sit back and enjoy the delicious food.
It also possible to take trips into Guatemala and visit the Mayan ruins at Tikal; an overnight stay is recommended.
Our Comment
Chaa Creek does not have the intimidating feel of some luxury hotels; it has created a peaceful atmosphere with friendly and well-informed staff.
