Belize: Ambergris Caye: Matachica Resort and Spa

Ambergris Caye is the most northerly and largest cay in Belize, 46km long, and a breathtaking 15 minute flight low over transparent turquoise waters from Belize City. The island offers a splendid vantage point from which to enjoy the barrier reef less than a kilometre from the shores of the relaxed main town of San Pedro, with its wide choice of accommodation, restaurants and bars. The island's main attraction is the first class diving, snorkelling and fishing on offer just off its shores.

Matachica Resort and Spa is a stylish and exclusive hideaway set on a secluded glistening white sand beach reached only by boat from the town of San Pedro.

The ambience at the resort is, in spite of its luxury, decidedly laid-back.

Each of its 26 thatched cottages and villas (some have two bedrooms for families and friends) is boldly painted in the bright colours of tropical fruits.The interiors, where décor is more subtle with white walls creating a bright, cool and spacious feel, are individually decorated with hand-painted murals, and many of the plush furnishings have been collected from Mexico and Central America. All have roomy bathrooms with hand-painted Mexican tiles, and a veranda with hammock.

The large main lobby has a spacious lounge, WiFi, and reading room with comfy sofas and soothing music. The spa offers massages combined with aromatherapy or a body mask and other beauty treatments.

There is also a large freshwater infinity pool and jacuzzi. The resort can arrange diving (including PADI tuition, but it doesn not have its own dive shop), snorkelling and fishing. There are complimentary kayaks, sunfish dinghies, wildsurf boards and snorkelling gear. You can also borrow a bike to explore the surrioundings.

Trips to visit the rainforest and Mayan ruins on the mainland are available.
