Trinidad is a beautiful colonial town close to Cuba's south coast, with terracotta-tiled roofs, cobbled streets and pastel-coloured buildings. Founded in 1514, the town was originally used as a base for expeditions into the 'New World', its 5 main squares and 4 churches date from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The town has hardly changed in a century, no suburbs creep out from its historic centre and no high-rise buildings obscure the view to the sea. Home-grown talent fills the squares and music venues in the evenings, when the town comes alive with dancing and the sound of salsa.
The Iberostar is undoubtedly the most luxurious hotel here. It is centrally located on the tranquil Parque Céspedes and is a convenient base from which to explore this delightful town on foot.
The elegant colonial building has been comprehensively restored, and its large lobby complete with fountain and marble staircase is impressive. The ground floor restaurant and cigar bar are in synch with the regal atmosphere.
There are 40 rooms including four suites are beautifully decorated and have tiled floors and mahogany furniture. All have cable TV and a majority have a small balcony or terrace facing the park.
Our Comment
A popular place to go in the evenings is Casa de la Musíca, an open-air street bar where you can dance to the live beats of the Chan Chan or Hasta Siempre and the mojitos and daiquiris flow...
