Located on a hillside above the village of Las Terrazas, this lodge is set in acres of forest in the Sierra del Rosario Nature Reserve, about 60km from the capital.
Las Terrazas is a co-operative village set up in 1968 to be entirely self-sufficient. Surrounding it is mountainous tropical forest restored over the past 30 years (prior to then, the area had suffered deforestation and was bare). the “Complejo Turistico” includes La Moka Ecolodge
This unusual lodge overlooks a lake in acres of restored forest. It has a coloured tiled roof and a multi-tiered lobby built around a large lime tree which climbs through 2 floors and up through the roof via a skylight.
Throughout the hotel, tropical light filters through and the place is swamped with over-sized flowers . It has 34 en suite rooms in colonial style with air-con, fridge and cable TV in 2 separate 2-storey blocks built along the ridge of the brow of the hillside. Rooms are accessed by a walkway, and have a secluded balcony that looks out over the forest and valley below.
The large swimming pool, tennis courts, café and restaurant are reached by a path which winds through the verdant landscaped gardens. Activities include hiking, bird watching, bathing in natural pools 2km away, and a canopy tour whizzing through the jungle foliage by zip-line. There is no internet access. There is a vegeterian restaurant in the village.
Our Comment
The village Las Terrazas itself looks like a bland 1960s residential estate, which sounds awful, but isn't. It's below the hotel, which is built into the very steep hillside, but views are over the valley rather than the village (since the hill is concave).
