Paraguay is one of only two landlocked countries in Latin America (the other is Bolivia). Its relatively isolated position makes it one of the least visited parts of the region. Being a tranquil and friendly rural backwater, Paraguay combines well for overland travel between Argentina, Brazil and Bolivia. To the east, it borders one of the continent’s greatest natural landmarks - the magnificent Iguazú Falls, reached from Brazil via bustling Ciudad del Este.
Other attractions include: the fascinating Jesuit ruins of Trinidad and Jesús; the relaxed, riverside capital of Asuncíon; the Mennonite communities in the Chaco region; Itaipú – the largest hydroelectric dam in the world; and numerous national parks abundant with wildlife and a haven for birdwatchers. What’s more, Paraguayan footballer Roque Santa Cruz was recently named Best Looking Footballer in the World!
