Charities

At Journey Latin America we support a number of small charities on an ongoing basis.  We believe in helping local charities with little or no public awareness and where our support can make a real difference.  Our continual commitment helps them to plan for long-term development, as well as meet immediate needs.

These are the charities we currently support, please click on their name to read more about their amazing work, achievements and how you can help and get involved.

Que Rico! – supports and funds a children’s burns unit in Cochabamba, Bolivia.
Dental Project Peru – administer dental care and education to impoverished, rural areas in Peru.
CREA (Conservation, Research, Education, Action) – educates farmers in better farming methods to avoid deforestation and carry out research on the biodiversity of the Panama rainforest.
New Life Mexico – work with physically and sexually abused children in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

In addition to sending monthly donations we try to support our charities in a number of other ways.

  • Our Alcion group tour stays in the Posada Lazos Fuertes in Antigua where all profits go to the children’s charity Safe Passage.
  • 2009 saw a new group tour, Que Rico!, which spends 3 days with children from the burn’s unit, taking those physically able to town for a day of ice cream, swings in the park and general escape.  We donate £200 per person on this tour to the charity – read what our tour leader Pete Selman had to say about the experience.
  • In 2008 we sent every client who travelled to Peru a toothbrush kit to deliver to The Dental Project Peru in Cusco, and we encouraged clients to do the same.

Fundraising
During the year we hold ad hoc fundraising events for our charities.

In 2008 we held a fundraising pub quiz (which proved highly successful and competitive!), a member of staff did the ‘Hell Down South’ challenge and we held a sale of all old office furniture.  This year we raised an impressive £4269.50 for our charities.

In June 2010, many of our team dusted off their gym kits and took to the sports field in a light hearted (yet still highly competitive) sports day!  This event raised £306 through entries, guess the weight of the cake, numbers of sweets in the jar and of course a sweepstake on the winning team...

In June 2011, JLA staff organised a outdoor zumba class on Turnham Green in celebration of Blue-Footed Booby Day to raise awareness for the conservation of the Galápagos Islands.
