Relive the rarefied atmosphere of colonial Spain pepped up with luxury refinements in this converted monastery in the heart of old Cusco.
You aren’t allowed to ignore the history – Gregorian chanting is piped through the cloisters and religious art looms down from the stone walling – but you wouldn’t want to, the place is totally captivating. Operated by Orient Express, levels of service are characteristically high and the rooms decorated in classic style; each is different in size and shape owing to the building’s former role – some were humble monks’ cells, but many now have oxygen pumped in to them to reduce the effects of altitude. There are 4 little courtyards to wander around and a magnificent stone-arched restaurant.
We’ve been there
"There are nice romantic touches in all the rooms, such as candles in the bathrooms; in the deluxe suites you are lent an alpaca shawl for use in the hotel." Kathryn Allan, Product team leader |
Don’t miss
The chance to look around the chapel with its ornate wooden carvings and gold filigree.
When’s best to go?
Cusco is at its sunniest from May - Sept when nights are cool (but you are warm cosy in your hotel room). Easter and Christmas are just two of the many occasions for vivacious fiestas and parades throughout the year - ask us for details
Getting there
Cusco is an hour’s flight from Lima or Arequipa and the centrally-located hotel is a 10 minute drive from the airport
Will it suit you?
If you are looking for a first class experience, not just a comfortable hotel room, reflecting the atmosphere of colonial Spain, it is perfect. Youngsters may be a bit awestruck by the formality.
