Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica

A real mix of romance and elegance in the jungle, this is a top-notch lodge, one of a prestigious Peruvian chain of imaginative and innovative upmarket properties.

Of all the lodges in the Peruvian Amazon, this one is definitely the most luxurious, and offers the most privacy. There are 30 individual thatched-roofed, mellow lantern-lit cabins with crisp white bed-linen, shiny polished wood floors and warm-water showers. A lofty wooden pavilion houses the excellent restaurant, with a menu brimming with fresh local ingredients and there is a mezzanine lounge with comfy sofas and panoramic rainforest views. A range of escorted excursions is offered so that you can appreciate the bird and butterfly life around the hotel and possibly spot shier mammals and reptiles hiding in the creeks along the river.

We've been there

This is great for anyone wanting to experience jungle magic but without a huge wildlife agenda. We particularly approved of the decision to avoid electricity, except in the public areas; this makes for a really atmospheric base from which to enjoy the sounds of the jungle. Kathryn Allen, Product team leader

Don't miss

The extra facilities this lodge has to offer which some of the simpler ones don't: the massage spa, canopy walkway and butterfly house.

When's best to go?

It rains all year round in the Peruvian Amazon but less from Apr-Oct, when cool winds (friajes) can lower the otherwise uniformly high temperatures.

Getting there

This lodge is one of the most accessible in the region; a 45 minute boat trip form Puerto Maldonado, which is a short flight from Lima or Cusco.

Will it suit me?

This is the best lodge in the region for those seeking comfort and just a taste of the rainforest experience. Families are welcome, and children are well-catered for.
