Hacienda La Ciénega

The pretty countryside running the length of the Avenue of the volcanoes is dotted with old estates whose frequently grandiose buildings - harking back to a more opulent past - have been converted into countryside hotels.

Relatively new to tourism, they still have an authentic feel, and most are run personally by their proprietors.

They offer the option of a peaceful, country base for visits to local markets and villages as well as opportunities to take part in outdoor activities such as biking, horse-riding or hiking.

La Ciénega

Located on the fringes of Cotopaxi National Park, this grand hacienda was built in 1670 for one of the most powerful families in Ecuador - the Lasso family.

Converted into a hotel in the mid 80s, it has 35 rooms, simply decorated in white and cool blue.

The entrance is lined with giant eucalyptus trees and the grounds, with fountains and well kept gardens, attract an array of wildlife including several species of hummingbird unique to the region.

The great explorer and naturalist Alexander Von Humboldt was one of its many famous visitors.

Our comment

"This historic building is an ideal base from which to explore the Avenue of the volcanoes."
