Refugio Ecologico Caiman - Pantanal, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil

Refugio Ecologico Caiman is located on one of Brazil's largest cattle ranches covering 130,000 acres of savannah along the Aquidauana River in the Southern Pantanal. The Pantanal is well known for its concentration of fauna, similar to that found in the Amazon Rainforest, yet much easier to spot due to the wide open spaces.

Caiman offers eco-tourism programmes from its three small first class lodges. In high season (June-December) programmes start on Sundays and Thursdays only for 3, 4 or 7 nights. In low season, packages are more flexible.

Location

The Refugio Ecologico Caiman is located in the Brazilian Pantanal, a vast wetland the size of France.

The ranch is accessible from Campo Grande Airport, from there it is a four-hour journey to Caiman, beginning with a three-hour drive to the town of Miranda before turning off on to a dirt track for the final 36km to Sede Lodge.

There are flights from Sao Paulo with connections possible from other destinations within Brazil.

Things to do

Excursions are included and are generally between two to four hours in duration. Guests are accompanied by a bilingual guide normally a biology, zoology or ecology graduate.

Tours are either by open-sided truck, horseback or boat. Species you may see include anteater, armadillo, opossum, capybara, anaconda, giant otter, howler monkey, ocelot and if you are very lucky, jaguar.

"I saw toucans, rheas, caiman, peccaries, capybaras, and ring-tailed coatis; hyacinth and red-and-blue macaws, curassows, hawks, falcons, storks, ibis, kingfishers, kiskadees and troupials. Tapirs, jaguars and giant anteaters (I saw one) are occasionally seen."
