El Pedral Hotel - Valdés Peninsula, Argentina

This elegant 19th century farmhouse is set within an impressive estancia overlooking a vast stony beach near Península Valdés.

El Pedral would appeal to those wanting a full 'get away from it all' Patagonian experience: intimate lodging on a historic estancia; rewarding wildlife viewing; and numerous activities on offer including mountain-biking, kayaking and horse riding.

Location

El Pedral is located near Península Valdés - a rugged piece of Atlantic coastline and home to a variety of Patagonian wildlife including guanacos, rheas, armadillos, sea lions, elephant seals and in season - penguins and whales.

The estancia overlooks the beach at Punta Ninfas on the southern promontory of the semi-circular bay on which Puerto Madryn sits, and has views of the whole bay. It is accessible by road from the airport at Trelew (two hours) with several flights daily from Buenos Aires. The road transfers are included in the price.

Things to do

All activities are included and guest enjoy the flexibility of ebing able to choose between a variety of options. Depending on weather conditions, the guides recommend the best options to do each day.

These include a boat ride to see the sea lion colony near the lodge and viewing Magellanic penguins at Punta Tombo (Oct-Mar). There is also a trek passing very close to an elephant seal colony - a good spot to also see killer whales. During the whale season, there are boat excursions from El Pedral or from Puerto Pirámides (Aug-Nov).

The estancia can organise horse riding (all levels catered for), trekking or mountain bike circuits across the hills surrounding the lodge, or through the Patagonian plains where it's possible to spot bird life, armadillos and other wildlife. Sand dune motor-buggies are a fun alternative transport for short rides on the beach or plains.
