El Bordo de las Lanzas is one of the region’s most historical estancias, in an area that once marked the crossroads between the Rio de la Plata and Alto Peru, two ancient Spanish viceroyalties. Built in 1609, the house belongs to the Arias family, members of which are proud descendants of some legendary Argentine historical figures, including Jose Miguel de Guemes – a key figure in the War of Independence.
Visitors to the estancia are treated like guests of honour and are encouraged to feel at home by the friendly and attentive staff. Surrounded by 2,500 hectares of land, this beautiful mansion is furnished with colonial artefacts and pictures that have been handed down through the generations of this historic family.
Location
El Bordo de las Lanzas is located amidst flat arable land only 50 minutes on a good paved road from Salta (where there is an international airport), and 20 minutes’ drive from Jujuy. The small indigenous villages of Humahuaca and Purmamarca are between one and a half and three hours away. Cars may be hired locally, or staff can arrange taxis to and from the ranch.
Things to do
The area surrounding El Bordo de las Lanzas offers some fascinating excursions to the small and picturesque indigenous villages of Humahuaca and Purmamarca. Salta is a short drive away and is set in a strikingly beautiful valley. Founded in 1582 the city has a fine collection of colonial buildings and is renowned for its handicrafts.
The Arias family has a second estancia, located near El Rey National Park, and you may spend a day exploring the region on horseback. The Park boasts diverse and unusual wildlife, including spiny anteaters, monkeys, jaguars, and several species of snake. |
