This extraordinary, self-contained estate surrounded by snow-dusted mountains and blood-red canyons claims to be the highest, and oldest, vineyard in the world, and is surely one of the most remote.
The historic vineyard is located hidden away in the sunlit Calchaquies Valley, which has been farmed since pre-Inca times. The oldest vines came from cuttings of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon introduced from France. Stay here to sample the wine, top quality cuisine and enjoy the delightful countryside on foot, horse-back or mountain bike. There are just 9 huge, fire-lit rooms in a colonial-style modern building decorated in bold colours and rooms ooze with atmosphere in the evening twilight. The lavender fields and vine trees surrounding the lovely (but unheated) pool lend the place a relaxing Mediterranean feel.
We’ve been there
"For me, finding a state-of-the-art winery and luxurious boutique hotel in such a remote location at the end of a tough but spectacular drive added to the aura which surrounds Colomé. It is, indeed, truly impressive." David Nichols, Product Manager |
Don't miss
The chance to go horse-riding, which is fine for beginners and the rides are in our view some of the most scenic (of the many) we have ridden on the continent.
When’s best to go?
Each of the contrasting seasons has its attractions in terms of climate, it can be cold in winter but the rooms are especially cosy.
Getting there
200km from Salta in the northwest Argentinean Andean foothills, the estancia is reached by a 5 hour scenic road journey.
Will it suit me?
Good for couples and wine-buffs. You may need to be a bit self-reliant here as the staff speak little English and you may not bump into the other guests too often.
