These days the word ‘eco’ has become a buzz word to describe projects when often they are anything but. Morgan’s Rock, though, is at the forefront of sustainable tourism in Nicaragua, preserving primary forest and protecting and re-introducing endangered wildlife.
Blending into the natural surroundings - to the degree that some rooms even have a tree growing through the roof - the lodge succeeds in giving guests creature comforts and rustic luxury. Most of its large bungalows, built from reforested or legitimately logged woods, are perched spectacularly on a hilltop overlooking a sweeping bay on the Pacific Ocean.
Location
Morgan's Rock lies on Nicaragua's Southerly Pacific coast, 20 minute's drive from the nearest port of San Juan del Sur. Rivas is the main town in the area, 35 minutes away.
The eco-resort is usually reached from the capital, Managua or the Costa Rican town of Liberia (both 2½hrs), or the colonial gem of Granada (1½hrs). The final 45 minutes’ drive is along a bumpy gravel road.
Things to do
The private nature reserve is diverse - tropical dry and secondary forest, hardwood plantations, pastureland, hills and the ocean. Wildlife is abundant and howler monkeys are regularly seen close to the lodge. The area can be explored independently or guided on foot, by kayak, mountain bike or on horseback.
Guests can tree plant and learn about reforestation, visit its farm, a sugar mill or a butterfly farm. One can accompany local fishermen catching fresh fish for the hotel. In season (Aug-Jan), sea turtles come to the beach to lay their eggs. Snorkelling, diving, surfing and sports fishing can also be organised. Additionally, day tours to the colonial town of Granada (pictured opposite) and Masaya Volcano are on offer.

We’ve Been There
"Amazing...the rear of the cabin sits on the mountain whilst the front is supported by stilts - you feel as if suspended in the air, floating."
Diego Vigliani, Manager, Bespoke Department.
