A bit more time?
Head over the water to mainland Honduras and visit Copán, the vast, forest-clad Mayan city with its pyramids, temples and famous stone carvings. In the mountain hinterland are gracious colonial towns such as Esperanza and Gracias.
Weather watch
The island has a tropical climate with plenty of hot sunshine tempered by cooling trade winds. Most rain falls in the form of short, heavy showers between Sep and Feb, but the winter school holidays have the coolest temperatures.
