Cala Luna is a small, elegant beach escape, a short drive from the village of Tamarindo on Costa Rica's beautiful North Pacific coast. It is set within a lovely manicured tropical garden with overhanging bougainvilleas, and constructed using hardwoods and stone. The predominant colours are pastel: terracotta, ochre and oatmeal.
The setting is wonderful - a short walk away are broad expanses of wild beach scattered with coral and shells, and forest and mangroves abundant with wildlife.
Location
The secluded resort can be accessed overland from San Jose in five hours but most visitors arrive by air, a 45-minute flight from the capital to Tamarindo. The international airport of Liberia is also just an hour's drive.
Things to do
The beach in front of the hotel is rocky, but adjacent are numerous broad, wild beaches (a mixture of tiny bits of coral and grey volcanic sand), though not ideal for swimming. Playa Langosta is a surfing 'Mecca', especially for those who surf 'to the left'.
Activities include golf, yoga, tennis, horse riding, mountain biking and a host of water activities, such as diving, surfing, water-skiing and deep-sea fishing. Guests can view the wildlife of the local mangroves by kayak, or simply relax by the pool.
Our comment
"The shady open-air restaurant/ breakfast room reaches almost to the edge of a big pool - a dip then a sip of tropical toronja juice." |
