Chan Chich is no ordinary lodge, it's an experience. Its luxurious cabins occupy the lower plaza of a 1200 year-old Mayan temple. The surrounding rainforest, part of a 55,000 hectare private reserve in one of the most remote corners of Belize, has long been removed from the destructive hands of hunters and loggers.

A rich diversity of flora and fauna, including howler and spider monkey, jaguar, ocelot and a myriad species of bird is to be found here. Whether or not you are fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of a wild cat during your visit, it is unlikely you’ll leave Chan Chich without feeling humbled by the overwhelming supremacy and beauty of nature.

Location

Chan Chich is located on the private Gallon Jug Estate, in north-western Belize. The lodge can be reached in half-an-hour by light aircraft from Belize City municipal airport as well as some provincial airfields.

The lodge can also be reached by road from Belize City in approximately four-hours (four-wheel drive vehicle advisable), depending on the weather and condition of the road. Whichever way you choose to arrive, the journey is part of the overall experience. It's probably most interesting to fly to the lodge and return to Belize City overland.

Things to do

However tempting it may be to spend all day enjoying the fabulous setting of Chan Chich Lodge, you are sure to want to explore during your stay here and the possibilities are as varied as they are impressive.

A guide service is available if you would like to be accompanied in the jungle by an expert eye. It's definitely worth considering a guided walk to familiarise yourself with your surroundings. Guided night walks are also organised on a daily basis, weather permitting.

Jaguar sightings at Chan Chich are frequent, with over one sighting per week in 2002.

The Lodge organises driving tours, horseriding, canoeing and archaeological excursions, there are nine miles of well marked trails to explore. Depending on your tariff, excursions will be charged to your bill locally.
